The Railway's Effect on Population
Guildford & Horsham:
Both towns grew because of being serviced
by railway lines, but the rail link between them did not really
affect that growth.
Villages on the Cranleigh Line:
Cranleigh School was founded in 1863
and opened in 1865 with just 22 boarders and 4 day boys but later
expanded to 400 pupils (most of which would have used the railway
at the beginning and end of each term).
Cranleigh, Bramley & Wonersh grew due
to the railway providing a good link with Guildford and therefore
connections to many other places, whereas Rudgwick & Slinfold
did not grow as much. This could well be because the stations
at both villages were not centrally located within the villages,
like the stations at Cranleigh & Bramley were, but were some distance
from the villages. The number of buildings at Baynards hasn't
changed much in many decades. One row of terraced houses known
as "Lawns Cottages", "The Thurlow Arms" pub,
the old "Thurlow Arms Inn" (now a private house) and
Baynards Farm. The only major change was that Baynards Manor House
burnt down in 1979. (under what some think, to be quite suspicious
circumstances!)
